Helen again the most sustainable brand among energy companies
For the second year running, Helen has been ranked first among Finnish energy companies in the largest survey in the Nordic countries concerning citizens’ views on the sustainability of well-known companies.
Helen’s overall ranking was 32 in the Sustainable Brand Index™ survey. Electricity companies in general were ranked high, and the sector was assessed as the third most sustainable sector. Helen ranked first among Finnish energy companies for the second year running.
“Helen’s sustainability stems from its strategy, which aims for climate-neutral energy production. We carry out constant and active debate with our stakeholders and develop our operations on that basis, says Pirjo Jantunen,” Helen’s Manager of Corporate Social Responsibility.
Helen Ltd has been trading under the name of Helen since the beginning of 2015 when Helsingin Energia became Helen. Sustainability is part of Helen’s brand, but it is not self-purposefully underlined in the company’s brand marketing and communication.
“This is a great result when you take into account, e.g. Helen’s visibility in the media debate concerning the use of coal. However, Helen’s sustainability image is solid as sustainability is an integral part of all our activities: production development, services, sales, and marketing. Practical deeds speak for themselves, but no one will know about them unless we communicate about these issues – and preferably in the most interesting way possible,” says Sanna Jääskeläinen, Head of Communications and Brand Management.
The results of the Sustainable Brand Index™ survey were in line with Helen’s own surveys. Ninety-two per cent of Helen’s own customers are of the opinion that Helen is more sustainable than energy companies in general, and 95 per cent think that Helen is more reliable than energy companies in general.

Sustainable Brand Index™, this is how the survey was carried out
The Sustainable Brand Index is the largest sustainability survey in the Nordic countries, and it has been carried out every year since 2011. The survey aims to disseminate and promote knowledge of sustainable development. A total of some 40,000 respondents in the Nordic countries were interviewed in the 2018 survey: 16,600 in Sweden, 6,200 in Norway, 7,000 in Denmark and 9,600 in Finland. The target group of the surveys consisted of people aged from 16 to 70 in the countries in question. The sample represents the population structure of the country in question. The interviews were conducted between January and March in 2018.
