Smouldering fires in the Hanasaari coal storage facility
From time to time, there are minor smouldering fires in the coal storage facility. The facility is inspected on a daily basis, which makes it possible to extinguish any smouldering fires with immediate effect. A smouldering fire and any resulting smoke do not present a risk to the surrounding areas.
Minor smouldering fires arising from self-ignition of coal take place from time to time in the coal storage facility of the Hanasaari power plant. These can be seen in the storage area as smoke resulting from the smouldering and as glowing nests of fire, sometimes also displaying small flames, especially after dark. The smouldering will not spread into a fire and the small amount of smoke does not present a health risk. The smoke may mainly cause a certain degree of odour disturbance.
The coal storage facility is inspected daily, and all necessary measures, such as putting out smouldering fires, are done with immediate effect. The extinguishing is carried out by the power plant’s own staff.
Any smouldering fires or other abnormal observations related to the storage facility can be reported to the control room of the Hanasaari power plant, tel. 09 617 3431, or to the shift supervisor, tel. 09 617 3433
