Thermal imaging cameras used for surveying the district heating network
The district heating network in Helsinki will be surveyed from a helicopter with a thermal imaging camera in November in order to localise any thermal leaks.
The helicopter flights will take place after sunset when the volume of traffic will be lighter and the sunshine does not hamper the operation of the thermal imaging camera. The thermal imaging flights will take place in November when the weather permits and the ground is frost-free and without a snow cover.
Thermal imaging is used for localising any thermal leaks and for monitoring and analysing the condition of transmission lines.
The district heating network is surveyed with a thermal imaging camera from a height of 300 metres. The helicopter will cover the area selected to be surveyed in a back and forth pattern. Any leaks are shown in the images as warm areas.

A record-low number of leaks in the district heating network
The number of leaks in the district heating network in Helsinki has fallen throughout the 2000s despite the fact that the district heating network is continuously expanded to new residential areas. Systematic work in condition management of the district heating network, as well as new technology create a good basis for a reliable security of supply.
